Kentucky Rain in Wisconsin
After months of waiting, weeks of worrying, and days of planning, our vacation was finally here. At 10 AM, we loaded up the vans and started our trek to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. After 6 hours of singing “Jolene” and “Staying Alive”, we arrived at our bungalow and were greeted by . . . turkeys!!! Sure enough, the house next door had free range birds that we quickly befriended. We got settled and headed into town for our first meal of vacation. Midway through our cheesecake and pie, we heard a BOOM! And then another one! Soon, fireworks had filled the sky. Although Chip said he thought the “fireworks were ridiculous”, we were all dazzled by the bright lights and big booms. Our vacation was off to a great start!
The rest of our vacation was action-packed and adventure-filled. One day, we went to the movie theater. The crew split up with some seeing Fast and Furious 9 and the other half watching Peter Rabbit 2. Another day, we went to the beach. We set up our big blue canopy on the sand and enjoyed water gun fights all day. Jeff says that his favorite part of vacation is when “Angie pushed [him] in the water and [he] swam like a fish”. We also went on a boat ride where we got to watch the crew deliver mail to the houses around the lake.
Our nighttime activities were just as fun as the daytime ones. One evening, we built a campfire in the backyard and roasted marshmallows. Angie brought her guitar and led us in songs. We sang “Kentucky Rain”, “If I Were a Rich Man”, “Edelweiss”, and many more! Our songs sounded so beautiful that the turkeys from next door walked over and joined in the fun. Other activities included a game night and a movie night!
Our last day of vacation was a big day for Sunrise House - Chip’s Birthday! We woke up and had Razzleberry Pie for breakfast!! We had a blast watching a James Bond movie. After lunch, we went to a bowling alley with a car show. After 2 games of bowling(including one where Patty broke 100!), we went to Chip’s favorite restaurant: Applebee’s. At Applebee’s, Lauren persuaded the boys to try her favorite appetizer, mozzarella sticks. They were a HUGE hit! To cap off a wonderful vacation, Chip got us all ice cream sundaes!
The next morning we packed up 2 vans, 4 core members, 7 folding chairs, and 9 suitcases. Tired and happy, we headed back to Saint Louis. We loved Lake Geneva and can’t wait for our next vacation!
